Its Origins

Way back during the 15th century in France, it is referred as a strap apparatus or a thong!
In the French army, lanyards were used as the aids in connecting the pistol, a sword or a whistle for making signals to the uniform semi-lasting.

In the military, the lanyards of different color mixture and braid patterns were being placed on the shoulders of a uniform to signify the wearer's qualification or the regimental affiliation.

The members of the Royal Artillery of the British countries wore a lanyard which initially held their keys for adjusting a fuse of an explosive shell.

What is a lanyard?

The lanyard is a thin strap that is being worn around someone’s neck to hold his an identification badge, keys, small objects or a whistle. You can see the lanyards are used everywhere in hospitals, special events, businesses, schools, conventions, reunions, and with numerous recreational activities.

It can be used as well as an advertising tool together with the personalized logo or a name printed on its strap. They are coming in different types and colors and with a variety of hardware fastened at the base for holding retractable badge reels, ID badge holders and the like.

Lanyards can be prepared by nylon, polyester twill, cord or cotton. The cord style is the least pricey, but may not be printed since it lacks an even surface of a strap-type. Most of it has a little bulb that has a retractable reel for use with the keys or ID badges. Sometimes, having breakaway connector so when the lanyard gets caught accidentally, it will be released before it will be pulled on the neck. Strap-type lanyard can be made of poly-twill or nylon, cotton, and are normally printed with the team or company name, the logo and the product. There are three different printing techniques to be used: dye sublimation lanyard, woven lanyard and the screen printing lanyard.

Lanyards are not just for holding IDs.

Lanyards may be used as a mode of self expression which permits the world to know that this particular organization or issue is what you care about. Lanyards are considered the top promotional gift choice and to give lanyards a distinctive and an easy remembered name, it is called as ID lace in some other countries.
